Things I love Thursday... Spring!

I love Spring! Autumn is my favorite season, by far, without comparison... but Spring is awesome also!  I love how everyday new plants are blooming and each day the trees are a little more green.

My love of spring started when I finally had my own yard. Prior to that, spring was 'okay' and it was kind of muddy.  But now that I have a yard and I can enjoy each of the plants as they grow and bloom, I love spring.

Some other things that I love about spring:

Baseball, warm sun, rain, t-shirts, capri pants and flip flops, BBQs, hiking, the smell of fresh cut grass, color! and gardening

10 easy ways to go green and help the environment

In honor of Earth Day, 10 easy ways to go green and help the environment:

http://www.thedailygreen.com/going-green/latest/green-tips-10-easiest?src=nl&mag=tdg&list=dgr&kw=ist

1. Stop Idling

Every moment you spend idling your car's engine means needlessly wasting gas, as well as rougher wear on your vehicle. Idling for more than 10 seconds wastes more gas than is needed for startup. Overall, Americans idle away 2.9 billion gallons of gas a year, worth around $78.2 billion.

2. Turn Off Your Computer

Save energy and wear and tear on your hardware by shutting down your computer at night. You'll save an average of $90 of electricity a year. The Department of Energy recommends shutting off your monitor if you aren't going to use it for more than 20 minutes, and the whole system if you're not going to use it for more than two hours.

3. Sign Up for Green Energy

More than half of all electricity consumers in the U.S. now have the option of purchasing green power from their utility. Find out how you can buy it by visiting the Department of Energy's state-by-state list of providers. You can also check with your own utility to see what's available.

4. Turn Down the Thermostat

It definitely pays to give a thought to your thermostat, since most households shell out 50 to 70% of their energy budgets on heating and cooling. For every degree you lower the thermostat, you'll save between 1 and 3% of your heating bill. Do the same thing in reverse with air conditioning.

5. Wash Your Laundry in Cold Water

An easy way to clean green is to turn the dial on your washing machine to cold. Most loads don't need hot water, and 90% of the energy used by washing machines goes into heating. The higher the water temperature, the higher the cost to you and the planet.

6. Pay Bills Online

Save natural resources - as well as late fees - by enrolling in online bill-paying options. Paperless billing not only saves trees; it also eliminates the fossil fuel needed to get all those billing envelopes from them to you and back again. Plus, you'll save money on stamps.

7. Jettison Junk Mail

Around 100 million trees and 28 billion gallons of water are used to send junk mail to Americans every year, according to greendimes.com. You can stop 75% of unsolicited mail by registering on the Mail Preference Service on the Direct Marketing Association Website (for a fee of $1). Within 90 days, most unsolicited mail will stop.

8. Print on Two Sides

Know what? It's not that hard to print two sides on your computer. But even though most software programs give that option, most of us still print only on one side of the page. Consider this: the U.S. alone uses 4 million tons of copy paper annually, about 27 pounds per person. Save dough and your local landfill. Print 2-sides.

9. Carpool It!

If your drive to work is 25 miles each way and at least half is in typical stop-and-go traffic, you'll save almost 10 percent of your monthly carbon emissions by carpooling. Not to mention the gas dollars you'll save and the fun you'll have sharing office gossip with your friends.

10. Choose Hormone-Free Milk

Look for milk that has been certified organic or carries the words 'no artificial hormones.' Conventional dairies inject cows with synthetic recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), aka bovine somatotropin (rbST), to boost production. The practice has been implicated in udder infections, requiring more veterinary antibiotic use, and is banned in many countries. Some scientists worry the hormones may affect consumers.

****************

How many of these do you follow? I pretty faithful about following #4, 5, 6, 7, 10.  I am working on #1 and 8. I am very bad about #2 - we have to make sure our computer is on during the night for updates and at home, well, it is so much easier to get to something really quick when it is already on. Terrible, I know!  Mike and I used to carpool to work (#9) when we worked together but now we work on the opposite side of town from one another.  I do pick him up for lunch on our 'Date Lunch' day - maybe that counts for a fraction of a point. :)

Star Wars Movie Night

Well I am a little late posting this... baseball and T-ball have kept us very busy these last 2 weeks!

On Friday, April 3rd we embarked on a 6 part movie night adventure! We started watching the Star Wars sextilogy.  Although the movies were produced out of order, #4, 5, 6 then #1,2 and 3, we decided to start with Episode 1: The Phantom Menace so we could watch the full story in the order it was written.

For treats, I made 'Death Star' cookies.  I used store bought cookies dough (not the best but the quickest) and homemade frosting and followed a design I found online.  For the masks, I used this website.  Except for Darth Mahl - for his mask I used a pic I found online.

The kids really enjoyed this movie and really got into it.  It may have helped that we got to see a lot of Star Wars characters at Hollywood Studios last summer when we went to Disney World.

The only challenge I can foresee is coming up with 5 more, different treats as we finish the series.  Any thoughts or ideas are much appreciated!

Thoughts on the Easter Bunny

My kids have never been huge fans of the Easter Bunny.  They love the baskets and gifts he leaves but they were always uneasy about talking to him or sitting on his lap.  We only have pictures from 2 years when they wanted (or were willing) to sit on the Easter Bunny's lap and one of them is V-girl alone... the K-man refused to go anywhere near him.

As we were driving the other week, this conversation took place:

V-girl: "Ommay, isn't it funny that the Easter Bunny knew we were going to Disney World last year and brought us stuff from our trip?"

Me: "Yes that is kind of funny.  That Easter Bunny, he must be pretty smart."

V-girl: "But how would he know THAT?"

K-man: "Because he talks to Santa Claus.  They work together."

V-girl: "Do they talk to the Tooth Fairy also?"

K-man: "Yes, they all talk and they work together"

V-girl: "I think the Easter Bunny is a guy dressed up in a bunny suit."  K-man agrees.

Me: "Why do you think that?"

V-girl: "Well it just doesn't make sense that a BUNNY could make it around the world to everyone's house in one night".

She is right, it makes much more sense for a grown man to hop around in a bunny suit and leave baskets for every child in the world, all in one night. *rotfl*

Aren't kids are the coolest?!  If only we still saw the world through their eyes.

Are your children's bath products safe?

This article published by the SafeCosmetics.org highlights the importance of all natural and organic personal care products for ourselves and our children. Remember, what we put on our bodies, is absorbed into our bodies.

http://safecosmetics.org//article.php?id=414

New Report: No More Toxic Tub

Getting Contaminants Out of Children's Bath & Personal Care Products
by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

Despite marketing claims like “gentle” and “pure,” dozens of top-selling children’s bath products are contaminated with the cancer-causing chemicals formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane, according to the March 2009 Campaign for Safe Cosmetics report, "No More Toxic Tub."

This study is the first to document the widespread presence of both formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane in bath products for children, including baby shampoos, bubble baths and baby lotions. Many products tested contained both chemicals.

What We Found

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics commissioned an independent laboratory to test 48 products for 1,4-dioxane; 28 of those products were also tested for formaldehyde.

The lab found that:

17 out of 28 products tested – 61 percent – contained both formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane.

23 out of 28 products – 82 percent – contained formaldehyde at levels ranging from 54 to 610 parts per million (ppm).

32 out of 48 products – 67 percent – contained 1,4-dioxane at levels ranging from 0.27 to 35 ppm.

Health Concerns

While a single product might not be cause for concern, the reality is that babies may be exposed to several products at bath time, several times a week, in addition to other chemical exposures in the home and environment. Those small exposures add up and may contribute to later-life disease.

Formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane are known carcinogens; formaldehyde can also trigger skin rashes in some children. Unlike many other countries, the U.S. government does not limit formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane, or most other hazardous substances in personal care products.

Where They Come From

The chemicals were not disclosed on product labels because they're contaminants, not ingredients, and therefore are exempt from labeling laws.

Formaldehyde contaminates personal care products when common preservatives release formaldehyde over time in the container. Common ingredients likely to contaminate products with formaldehyde include quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea.

1,4-dioxane is a byproduct of a chemical processing technique called ethoxylation, in which cosmetic ingredients are processed with ethylene oxide. Manufacturers can easily remove the toxic byproduct, but are not required by law to do so. Common ingredients likely to be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane include PEG-100 stearate, sodium laureth sulfate, polyethylene and ceteareth-20.

What You Can Do

Contrary to industry statements, there are no regulatory standards that limit formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane or most other toxic chemicals in personal care products sold in the United States. There are signs the U.S. is gearing to catch up, but for now it's up to consumers to consider carefully before they buy.

Here's some suggestions for safeguarding your family's health:

Simplify: Select products with fewer ingredients and no synthetic fragrance or dyes, and use fewer products overall.

Choose safety: Search EWG's cosmetic safety database, Skin Deep, to learn more about the products you use and find safer alternatives. Also check out EWG's Safety Guide to Children’s Personal Care Products.

Read labels: Select products for baby and yourself that don't contain the ingredients listed above, which are commonly contaminated with formaldehyde or 1,4-dioxane.

Take action! Can’t memorize these lists? Nobody can. If harmful contaminants and ingredients weren’t allowed in products, you wouldn’t have to. Tell Congress you want safe cosmetics for babies, adults and everyone in between.

Spread the word: Send an e-card letting friends and family know about this report.

Status Update

A major supermarket in China has pulled Johnson & Johnson products from the shelves amid concerns that the products are contaminated with carcinogens, driven by our testing. The Chinese government is also reportedly testing products. The Vietnamese Drug Administration announced March 16 that it will test baby products in that country. So far, there has been no action by the U.S. FDA.

Shopping with the Curse of a Ghetto Booty

I love shopping.  For Everything.  Even Groceries. Except pants. And even worse than pants... Capri pants.

I was blessed (yeah, "blessed") with what I affectionately call a "ghetto booty".  Some call it a "bubble butt", others call it a "badonkadonk" or  "Apple bottom" or many worse things and really, all descriptions fit.

Although I am happy that this "asset" finally seems to be popular (there are even catchy songs.. "Apple Bottom Jeans... with the fur") and I am possibly even bootylicious, I would be eternally grateful to all fashion designers and clothing manufacturers if they would actually make pants to fit by badonkadonk.  My waist and my butt are no where near the same size and although safety pins work when you are 5, they don't look very good when you are an adult. Although sadly, I do use them on more than one pair of pants.

And all the problems I have with normal pants are tripled with capri pants.  I am not sure if it is the shape of the pant leg or my short legs but they don't seem to work well with me.  It takes me months and many trials to find a pair that even looks decent.

I started the plight yesterday.  I came home with 2 pairs from Old Navy that I was neither thrilled with or certain of.  I am already planning on taking them back - unless I get great approval from my husband. Which is doubtful - he is just as picky as I am.

Sometimes, especially around April when I am shopping for capri pants, I envy the FLDS woman.  They all wear those same plain dresses that neither look good or bad.  Their apple bottoms and ghetto booties don't get in the way of the pleats and they cinch up or loosen the belts to fit their waist.  Or maybe I should move to a nudist colony.  Then I am not even allowed to wear capri pants and I wouldn't be married off at the ripe age of 14.

Well, until the time comes when I decide to make one of those life altering decisions, I would be grateful to anybody who has some good suggestions for capri pants that look good on bubble butts.

Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

It is so important to know what we are REALLY putting on our bodies. All though many products claim they are "safe" or "natural" they are anything but that. I first became aware of SafeCosmetics.org when I was searching out safe sunscreen. I had read an article that explained the many different toxins and carcinogenic ingredients that are included in sunscreens and I couldn't believe that I was religiously and voluntarily slathering this junk all over me and my kids 6 months out of the year.

Thanks to SafeCosmetics.org, I now only buy sunscreen that is considered a "low hazard" so my family and I still get great sun protection without all the dangerous chemicals. I also check on lotion, hair care products, makeup, toothpaste, etc.

SafeCosmetics.org "is a national coalition of nonprofit health and environmental organizations. Our collective goal is to protect the health of consumers and workers by requiring the personal care products industry to phase out the use of chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other serious health concerns, and replace them with safer alternatives. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is working with endorsing organizations, responsible businesses and thousands of citizen activists to shift the cosmetics market toward safer products and to advocate for smarter laws that protect our health from toxic chemicals and encourage innovation of safer alternatives."

One great thing about Affordable Mineral Makeup™ and Earth Mama Angel Baby™ is that they have signed the "Compact for Safe Cosmetics" - a pledge to formulate products that do not use ingredients that are known or suspected to cause certain health harms within three years of signing. We may be small but we care about our customers and the ingredients that go into our products. Read the Compact document or see a complete list of the signers. You can also search companies by name and find out if they have signed the "Compact for Safe Cosmetics" or if they test on animals (neither AMM™ or EMAB™ test on animals)

Safe on the outside for who's inside

It is so important to be mindful of what we put in and on our bodies.  And it is so hard to find good, toxin fee products to use.  That is why I was so excited to find Earth Mama Angel Baby.

What can you expect from Earth Mama Angel Baby?

Safe, pure and natural products that work.

What's the first thing most women do when they find out they are going to have a baby? They call their mama. When they need breastfeeding advice or answers about diaper rash, morning sickness, heartburn, and hemorrhoids? They rely on mama.

That's why Mama created Earth Mama Angel Baby®. Relying on generations of women's wisdom and plant knowledge, it's the only complete line of truly 100% natural skin and body care products to help ease the common discomforts of the entire process of birth - from pregnancy through labor, postpartum and c-section recovery, breastfeeding, and baby care, and even the loss of a baby.

Earth Mama Angel Baby products contain only the highest-quality, certified-organic or organically grown herbs and oils in our teas, bath herbs, gentle handmade soaps, salves, lotions, aromatherapy sprays and massage oils. Our products are 100% toxin-free, cruelty-free, vegan, and free from all artificial preservatives, fragrances and dyes. Unlike many so-called natural and organic products on the shelves today, an Earth Mama Angel Baby product has to pass our founding Mama's rigorous tests for safety, purity and efficacy. As a mother, nurse and herbalist, Mama's promise to each and every angel baby is that only pure, safe and effective products will leave the shipping docks. We believe that your gift from heaven deserves only the purest gifts from the earth.

Women looking for trusted advice and naturally safe products that work always come to Mama. You can trust her. After all, if Mama wouldn't use it on her own angel babies then she doesn't sell it. Promise.
